GAME OF THRONES AT #SXSW WILL MAKE YOU BLEED (AND YOU’LL BE GRATEFUL FOR IT)

Bleed for the Throne at the Game of Thrones #SXSW Experience
Nestled a three quarters of a mile away from the hubbub of the epicenter of SXSW in Austin is a hidden experience so exclusive, you’ll need to bleed to get in.
Ok well at least you should bleed to get in, as “Game of Thrones” has partnered with the American Red Cross in a lifesaving blood drive. They’re on track to collect over 15,000 pints of blood over the course of the activation. I have to wonder if anyone has done the math on how many pints of blood have been spilled over the last seven seasons of “Game of Thrones”?

Morbid calculations aside, the whole thing is somewhere between awe inspiring and utterly absurd. Once you’ve donated blood (no, it’s not actually mandatory, you can participate without donating) you’ll enter a guided audio/visual tour. I personally found that part slightly underwhelming. It’s what comes after that was worth it.

The best part of the audio / visual walkthrough was seeing The Mountain’s armor up close.

You’ll be greeted (and potentially berated) by over 80 actors in a “war camp.” To their credit they all stayed very much in character, though that character felt like something more out of a podunk renaissance faire than a full fledged developed “Game of Thrones” character. But hey, it’s still amusing!
What was most impressive was the “pinning ceremony” which involves a choir, accompanying musicians, and a 27-minute “Game of Thrones” inspired musical composition. If you are like me and always sing nonsensical words to the opening theme of the show, this is the place for you to be. It also culminates in receiving a baller Hand of the Throne (formerly King? Who knows… IS IT APRIL 14 YET?!) that not only looks great, but also will grant you discounts and access to some local Austin businesses. This includes 20% off at my beloved Shake Shack. Blood donors also receive t-shirts while supplies last).

The entire experience was just the right mix of cheesy and energizing. Plus it’s for a good cause! Pre-registered spots are full up but you can attempt standby. It runs Friday, March 8th: 12pm-6pm CT and Saturday, March 9th: 12pm-6pm CT at Fair Market: 1100 E. 5th Street, Austin, TX 78702.
