If the 2019 Golden Globes proved anything it’s that the real awards should be going to whoever is in control of PR budgets. It’s the only viable explanation for some of the wins.

FILM WINNERS
Best Picture – Drama
“Bohemian Rhapsody” – This is the perfect example of marketing dollars put to good use. Even if the Golden Globes used stacked rankings to vote, there is no other explanation aside from that as to how this won.
Best Picture – Musical or Comedy
“Green Book” – A quasi pleasant surprise but I still fail to see how this was considered a comedy or musical. Also I am a little sad that “Crazy Rich Asians” didn’t win.
Best Director – Motion Picture
Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” – Great choice, no complaints.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Glenn Close, “The Wife” – Not sure what happened here, and I can’t even blame advertising money (unless the entire movie’s ad budget was spent on a ‘For Your Consideration’ campaign).
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Just, wow. I continue to wonder if the voting members of the HFPA were sent a different cut than the one I saw.

Olivia Colman, “The Favourite” – Not a surprise, and I won’t necessarily argue with whether or not she deserved it. I will argue with “The Favourite” being classified as a Musical or Comedy.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Christian Bale, “Vice” – Shocked by this one as well, especially considering it’s the press who votes, and the press who’ve been pretty unkind to the film.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture
Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk” – Proving that sometimes the Golden Globes gets things right. Also points to the director of the Golden Globes who told the orchestra to stop playing King off when she challenged everyone to employ 50% women on their upcoming projects.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” – Again, nice to see they got a few things right (though I felt he wasn’t the supporting character…)

“The Kominsky Method,” Netflix – Part of me wants to chalk this up to Netflix money again, but I also haven’t seen this yet so maybe it was amazing? I will also say, I enjoyed the acceptance speech.
