Unfortunately “Tolkien” is more Lord of the Meh than “Lord of the Rings.”
While Nicholas Hoult does an admirable job of playing the author, the film is too even keeled and doesn’t give us enough of an understanding as to what led Tolkien to be the man who brought us a prolific mythology. Lily Collins, Patrick Gibson, Anthony Boyle, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Derek Jacobi also star.
