Review: X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The Last Black Man in San Francisco

This week brings a disappointing end to 20 years of the X-Men on the big screen in “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” and a somewhat sanitized portrait of San Francisco in “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.”

In spite of all the star power attached to “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” the film is dull at best. With phoned in performances and convoluted plots, perhaps we should all be grateful that a new chapter is going to be required since the Disney/Marvel acquisition occurred. Sophie Turner, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Nicholas Hoult and Evan Peters star.

Then there’s “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” which got overhyped for me coming out of Sundance. It’s the tale of Jimmie Fails hoping to reclaim his childhood Victorian home. Jimmie Fails, Jonathan Majors, Rob Morgan, Tichina Arnold, Mike Epps, Thora Birch, Danny Glover, and Finn Witrock.
