WHAT A NIGHT. Normally I am severely disappointed by The Oscars, but this year had some unexpected (but much deserved) wins that make me think there might be a smidgeon of hope for The Academy. Congrats “Parasite!!!
Another year where minorities and women were overlooked! Let’s take a look at this mish-mosh of nominees and at some folks who should have been nominated.
Every year the Golden Globes cause me to ask "did I see the same version of these films as the HFPA?"
“It’s an honor to be nominated!” - but what happens when great work by diverse artists get shut out?
In a telecast that ranked somewhere between uneventful to outright boring - the 2019 Emmy Awards provided few surprises. Some highlights were "Bandersnatch" winning for Television Movie (opening the door for awards validity for more unique streaming experiences), the few winners who chose to dedicate the limited time for their speeches to noble causes, and of course Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Billy Porter getting their much deserved rewards.
It’s also clear that there are only about 15 shows total on television right now. Oh wait just kidding we’re in the golden age of content for television and yet somehow only the same batch of shows are getting nominations. Something here is broken.
In the interest of full transparency I’ll fully admit that I’ve been very behind on my television watching this year. Therefore more often than not I’m making a best guess here informed by years of melting my brain in front of the ol’ boob tube. Also keep in mind some of these predictions are wishful thinking.
What did we learn from this year’s Academy Awards? Well the show actually seems to run just fine without a host. It was a great night for women of color (and particularly mothers of color who got thanked). Several categories are apparently just for sale.
Much like the chaotic mess that is this year's host-less Oscars, predicting them has been equally tumultuous. It's going to make for some great drinking games, and some not stunning upsets since there are fewer clear categories than in past years.
If the 2019 Golden Globes proved anything it’s that the real awards should be going to whoever is in control of PR budgets. It’s the only viable explanation for some of the wins.
After winning the category of BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA for her role in "Killing Eve," actress Sandra Oh poses backstage in the press room with her Golden Globe Award at the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA on Sunday, January 6, 2019.
Awards season kicks off again with the Golden Golbes!
The 90th Annual Academy Awards have come and gone, and while generally a predictable show in terms of the actual awards, I still felt we all are walking away losers when it comes to diversity and equality.
The big day is almost upon us! Awards season has been confusing so far, it’s still anyone’s game in certain categories. It’s also a question of being torn between what one WANTS to win, and what will win.
While the conversation on the red carpet may have been about “Times Up” and female empowerment, the Globes themselves fell into the same ol’ same ol’ awards patterns.
