Golden Globes 2020 Reactions

Every year the Golden Globes cause me to ask “did I see the same version of these films as the HFPA?”
This is in order of the telecast (so some telecast reactions peppered in). Overall the biggest takeaway from this year’s Golden Globes is that the Golden Globes once again make no sense. While there were some upsets I was delightfully surprised by, others came as such an absurd shock (even to the winners).

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy

  • Ramy Youssef, “Ramy” – I do love a short, sweet, and self aware speech. I guess we all have to check out “Ramy” now.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Russell Crowe, “The Loudest Voice” – Pardon me what? Also does this mean we aren’t allowed to question this win because he used his platform to promote climate change awareness and the situation in Australia?

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television
Hot priest was robbed. There is no god? Let us never forget though that Stellan Skarsgard was willing to be in Thor 2 so I guess homie deserves some wins.

  • Stellan Skarsgård, “Chernobyl” – I like that his entire speech was about eyebrows. Just Eyebrows.

Best Television Series — Drama

  • “Succession” (HBO) – Wasn’t shocked by this. Damn it we really do have to watch this now don’t we?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy

  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge, “Fleabag” – Ok there might be some justice in this awards season. Shoutout to hot priestttttt.

After winning the category of Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy for “Fleabag,” Harry Williams, Sarah Hammond, Joe Lewis, Brett Gelman, Sian Clifford, Harry Bradbeer, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Andrew Scott and Jenny Robins pose backstage in the press room with the Golden Globe Award at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA on Sunday, January 5, 2020.
Best Picture — Foreign Language

  • “Parasite”, South Korea – #Bonghive foreverrrrrr. There were seriously some amazing films in this category but I think the right one won. Also can we give Director Bong’s translators this awards season awards? They’ve been excellent support.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama

  • Brian Cox, “Succession” – Billy Porter was robbed.

Best Screenplay — Motion Picture

  • Quentin Tarantino, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” – Ugh, this won. So marks the beginning of the end of this awards season for me. What a self important rambling speech.

Best Motion Picture — Animated

  • “Missing Link” – What the what? Color me shocked, cause this is nonsense. I have nothing against “Missing Link” but it was not the best. They were as shocked as I think everyone that they won.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

  • Laura Dern, “Marriage Story” – I’m not upset.

Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy

  • “Fleabag” (Amazon) – For every 3 awards I get upset about, I feel like the HFPA gets one right to make up for it. Congrats to the “Fleabag” crew! Also I am so happy we acknowledged the Barack Obama thing.

Bong Joon Ho accepts the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language for “Parasite” from presenters, Sienna Miller and Kit Harington at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA on Sunday, January 5, 2020.
Best Original Song — Motion Picture

  • “I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” Rocketman – Age before beauty? The song was good so no arguments here. Given Beyonce’s reaction she seemed as somewhat surprised as I was.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Patricia Arquette, “The Act” – The show was good, I’m just surprised she beat Streep but I didn’t watch “Big Little Lies”

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama

  • Olivia Colman, “The Crown” – I thought that speech would be more fun, but I guess you can’t win em all.

Best Director — Motion Picture

  • Sam Mendes, “1917” – I can only assume a bizarre vote split caused this to happen.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Michelle Williams, “Fosse/Verdon” – Independent of how I feel about the win I always appreciate that Williams uses her time for important messaging. Also may we all be so lucky to have a BFF as supportive as Busy Phillips.

Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • “Chernobyl” (HBO) – Tiffany Haddish losing steam during this acceptance speech encapsulates my entire attitude towards it perfectly.

Best Original Score — Motion Picture

  • Hildur Guđnadóttir, “Joker” – I may have hated the film, but I do kind of like that the only woman in the category won. I also didn’t realize the nominee was a woman based on the name.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture

  • Brad Pitt, “”Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”” – Guess that “Irishman” split worked to his advantage.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy

  • Taron Egerton, “Rocketman” – Shocked but delighted by this win!

Best Picture — Comedy or Musical
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” – Gross. I’m already calling it, it’s this year’s “La La Land”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama

  • Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker” – WTAF. I feel like he is acting his way horribly through this speech, or is he drunk? Why didn’t he get cut off earlier?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama

  • Renée Zellweger, “Judy” – WHUTTTT? Did she and Joaquin blackmail everyone?

Best Picture — Drama

  • “1917” – OLD WHITE MEN ARE THE CAUSE OF THIS WIN.
