REVIEW: “A WRINKLE IN TIME” & “THOROUGHBREDS”

This week brings Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Madeline L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time”, and Cory Finley’s murderous teen thriller “Thoroughbreds.”

The source material for “A Wrinkle in Time” does not scream “make me into a film!” but if there was anyone who could potentially have done it, it was Ava DuVernay. While there are admirable things about the adaptation, ultimately it falls flat. It stars Oprah, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, Storm Reid, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris Pine, Michael Pena, and Zach Galifianakis.

Meanwhile Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Ready Player One) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) make a killer combo in the suburban set “Thoroughbreds.” Originally intended as a play, the brutal report between the two is enthralling to watch on screen. The film also stars Anton Yelchin (in one of his last roles) and Paul Sparks.
